The Japanese NAT-TEST (Nihongo NAT-TEST) is a widely recognized proficiency test designed to measure the Japanese language ability of non-native speakers. It is similar in structure and content to the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) and is often used as a preparatory or alternative assessment for those planning to live, study, or work in Japan.

Conducted multiple times a year across various international testing centers, the NAT-TEST is known for its frequent scheduling, fast result delivery, and practical assessment format.

The test is divided into five levels (Level 5 to Level 1), where Level 5 is the easiest and Level 1 is the most difficult.

TEST FORMAT

The NAT-TEST is divided into three main sections:

1. Language Knowledge (Vocabulary/Grammar)

This section evaluates your understanding of:

  • Japanese vocabulary

  • Basic to advanced grammar rules

  • Sentence structure

  • Kanji appropriate to the test level

Each test level reflects real-world use of language suited to daily communication, academic settings, or professional situations.

2. Reading Comprehension

In this section, candidates read passages and answer questions that test:

  • Reading for gist and specific details

  • Understanding logical flow

  • Identifying the writer’s tone and purpose

Passages range from advertisements and notices to magazine excerpts and articles depending on the test level.

3. Listening Comprehension

This component assesses your ability to:

  • Understand conversations in various everyday and academic contexts

  • Interpret meaning from tone, context, and content

  • Follow spoken Japanese at different speeds

Audio recordings feature native speakers and vary in complexity based on the level.

NAT-TEST LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS

  • Level 5: Equivalent to JLPT N5. Basic understanding of simple vocabulary and expressions used in daily life.

  • Level 4: Equivalent to JLPT N4. Can understand common expressions, basic sentence structures, and handle simple interactions.

  • Level 3: Similar to JLPT N3. Intermediate-level Japanese for everyday situations and slightly complex contexts.

  • Level 2: Comparable to JLPT N2. Understanding of a wider range of topics including workplace and abstract content.

  • Level 1: Equivalent to JLPT N1. Advanced comprehension of both spoken and written Japanese, suitable for academic and professional use.

SCORING & RESULTS

Each section of the NAT-TEST is scored separately, and you must achieve a minimum score in all sections to pass. Results are usually published within 2 to 3 weeks, making it a faster alternative for those who need immediate language certification.

You will receive a certificate upon passing, which can be used for applications to educational institutions or for visa-related purposes.
